Binge Eating Disorder: The Positive Effects of Exercise

Working out makes us feel great!Exercise can do many things.  It can regulate mood, relieve anxiety and depression, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, lower the risk of cancer, boost energy, and promote better sleep.  Because it’s common for people with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) to struggle with many of the above, Walden Behavioral Care has incorporated Fitness Therapy into their treatment plan.

As a Certified Personal Trainer and part of Walden’s Marketing and Community Relations Team, I am privileged to work as a trainer with our BED population.  The Fitness Therapy group takes place once a week for 30 minutes.  The focus of the group is to learn a variety of strength training exercises to relieve anxiety, depression, and boost mood (with many other secondary benefits).  Patients are taught the proper movements to avoid injury, and are taken through each exercise at their own pace.  Many participants prefer to stretch or start with exercises they can do while seated.  Others opt to use resistance bands or light weights as they feel comfortable.  After working with the patients for a short period of time, I’ve noticed a significant change in their mood.  Many have also gained the motivation to to do their own exercise routines outside of the program.

Exercise can greatly enhance an individuals BED treatment here at Walden, but it’s only part of the puzzle.  We also offer art therapy, yoga, walking, pet therapy, nutrition, and group and individual therapy.
